This week, I discovered there is a service that allows you to rent Lego, build it, and send it back.
(I found this because someone on Threads was saying “lego sets are so expensive, and once you build them where do you even keep them?” and someone replied to tell them about this rental company.)
I immediately decided it would be a good creative gift for the team.
I’ll be honest: the last year has been tough in my business. We’ve had some debt, for Reasons I won’t go into now. There have been Learnings, let’s just say. I hate debt, and it’s weighed on me and also prevented us doing fun things as a company for the team.
But creative things don’t have to cost the earth. Last December we wanted a creative session for the team, so I ordered a Lego seat to each team member’s house, and we opened and built them together on a team Zoom call.
So, when I discovered there’s a way to borrow and build Lego on a regular basis, I decided to offer it to the team as a little bonus extra. (It’s called Brick Borrow, and there’s one in the USA too, called Brick Library.)
We have a small core team. There are 7 of us, including me.
The grand sum to gift a little regular creativity to the team is less than £150 per month.
And not only have we saved about that much by cancelling Harvest and using monday.com for time tracking instead (thanks Harvest, for trying to charge us $900 per month and resulting in all this saved money and creativity)… but even if we didn’t have a spare £150 lying around, it’s a very small price to pay for a gift.
It’s a gift. A little (a very little) extra – but something small and appreciated.
It’s an opportunity for creative space. Lego set arrives, you open it up and build it, you can think about other things while doing it.
It’s a reminder that creative play is for adults, too. Not only are we creative with content and websites and brand and ads, but we can take a few hours out to build something (and not be on screens).
