Absolutely love trying a new restaurant, and @roya.gla was absolutely worth the wait (and getting on the waitlist when the tables at first seemed fully booked the night we wanted).

Everything was utterly exceptional - flavours, quality, temperature, speed - and the ambience luxurious and comfortable at the same time.

I basically recommend everything - and the dishes we particularly enjoyed were the Turkish cigars (honey date pastries like a very light and less-sweet baklava); the roasted beetroot and burrata (falling more in love with beetroot all the time); the lamb chops for the wood fired flavour; and the Dubai ball for dessert (ice cream surrounded by fine pastry and drizzled with pistachio crème).

And I had one of the best glasses of red wine I’ve had in a long time - huge thanks to @godwincpa who was available via WhatsApp to text me suggestions and help me choose the best one to go along with this fantastic meal. (And who now wants to sample everything himself!)

If you’re in Glasgow or can take a quick train, drive, bus, flight, or boat there - put this on your list! I’m also intrigued by their Middle Eastern Sunday roast, so that’s next up!

Yoga retreat.

Quiet early mornings. Pale pink in the sky. Movement. Stretching, my body and my mind and myself. Peace. Reading a physical book for hours on end. Resting. Walking. Exploring. Eating fresh, flavourful food. Wild sea swimming. Walking across the sand. Feeling the land. Trying new things.

Ever grateful for @wildrock.yoga and the gentle immersion into something I’d never tried before moving to the island.

And now it’s something I make sure always fits into my calendar.

I’ve been off coffee for two weeks.

This is NOT some noble health goal… I’m pretty miserable at the fact that I’ve had some bizarre cold/flu/virus thing that started out intense and has hung on like a limpet since.

Finally gave in and went to the doctors yesterday, but I’ve been drinking hot water and lemon and honey in the mornings as that’s all that sounds or feels good on my throat.

I’m not happier, healthier, or a better person without coffee.

I haven’t learned any strong lessons and come to appreciate what my life is like sans coffee.

Nope, I miss it every morning and am VERY excited to be healed soon and get back to my rhythms.

Because it isn’t merely about the taste or smell of coffee (tho I love that too). Or the way it does wake my brain up.

It’s the consistent rhythm of waking up, turning on the machine, checking for beans and water, waiting for it to think and bestir itself to goodness, watching it pour into the mug, and standing by the window watching the morning appear.

So if you are one of those amazing beautiful privileged people who CAN drink coffee right now…

…savour your little moments. I will join you as soon as I can.

(I’ve still managed to have some beautiful moments in life the last few weeks so I’ve shared a few of those here too! Because they are always around.)

This is a belated birthday post.

I struggle a bit with birthday days. There feels like so much expectation for the day itself to be this amazing, fantastic, day-like-no-other. Or to be surrounded by people or family to gather together or have a party. Lots of gifts.

That’s not quite my vibe anyway (hence living on a quiet island), but still the expectations seem real.

And this year for Reasons I wasn’t able to take the time off I’d planned: so I adjusted to something very simple, very small, very beautiful.

Just took a new walk on my favourite island. Wandered by the sea. Hiked up to the cliffs. Found an old cave. Drank whisky and tea, ate snacks from @thecoffeepotsalen and @tobermorybakery , and fresh water from the burn.

Walked in silence. Took calls from all my sisters, who made sure I knew I was loved and remembered on my day. Even got some sunshine and clearer skies after what felt like months of grey and darkness.

It was a beautiful day. I remembered the power of simply choosing to set aside some time for myself - no screens, no big expenses or events - and am as ever so grateful I get to live here, where this kind of beauty is accessible and available.

Happy birthday to me! 🎂🎉❤️🏆✨
