Dear accountant,

You are one of the most amazing people to exist in the business world.

You’re aware of your skills, but you also think it’s a little dramatic to rave about you, because you don’t like to boast.

Well, let me boast on your behalf, and remind you of the life changing, business supporting, even world changing work you do. And the person you are.

You’re supportive. Patient. You listen, and care about the business your clients run.

You’re measured. Wise. You consider your words, and are not carried away with emotion: not because you’re not capable of that, but because you know they need you to be their rock.

When the time is right, you direct them back to those beautiful little scratches which can change their lives: the numbers.

You create sheets the business owner doesn’t always understand, but you help them understand what they need to, and take care of the rest.

When the cash isn’t there, you help them find where it’s been hiding, and give it back to them. So they can pay their bills and pay their mortgages and buy the house and move to the country and pay for the children’s university and buy the horse. Or whatever matters to them.

Along with all of this, as if it’s not enough, you’re also a curious human being.

You think of new ideas, all the time. You love your team members: you praise them and direct them and help them find their sweet spot of using their skills in the way they truly enjoy. You care about the world you inhabit, and do everything you can to make it a little better.

You’re generous. You’re collaborative. If another accountant is struggling, you’re the first to speak up or offer your time. You help those who need help because it’s the right thing to do.

And you are who we love to help when it comes to understanding and enjoying marketing.

We will always believe you capable of great things.

Because you do great things every day.

Last week I started each day with a cold swim in a natural pool.

Cold water. Slight shock to the system, followed by a clearness of the mind and body like I haven’t had in a while. Planning to be in for a few minutes turning into a half hour of short laps, back and forth, back and forth.

Last week the PF team spent a week on retreat in Wales, and one of my favourite features of the place was a natural pool only a few steps from where I was sleeping every night.

Every morning (after a swim) I poured myself fresh granola with fresh yoghurt and local honey and brightly coloured strawberries. Because it was right there, bottled up and waiting for me.

Having good things nearby makes for good habits.

And being out of routine can help build new routines.

I admit I haven’t been quite so...clean and healthy since returning. It’s all too easy to grab the fast food on the drive home, or eat what is handy rather than what is quality and takes time to prepare. To skip the morning swim because I didn’t sleep so well...which is probably because I skipped a walk the day before...and so on.

But I see glimmers of change. I roasted my own oats the other night to make my own granola. Ate a banana instead of crisps. Skipped alcohol and drank more water.

A week isn’t nearly enough to rebuild all the habits I need to adjust, but it’s a damn good start.

And spending a week with the team, discussing all things strategy and creativity and marketing and values, is definitely a good reboot. Not to mention the early morning swims!

If you want a new result from your marketing, building your own marketing rhythms will help get you there.

In the book Atomic Habits, the realisation for the author @jamesclear was that results aren’t driven only by the goals you set, they are connected to the systems you follow.

You know the impact of showing up – daily social posts, weekly blogging, monthly podcasting. But it’s also possible you feel like you’re starting this too late.

You’re on the receiving end of it from others – like watching @jstaatscpa videos and thinking, “Wow, he’s everywhere: he’s so good”.

But if the first best time to start was years ago, the second best time is now.

At a certain point in the past Jason simply showed up. I interviewed him along with other accountants at an event several months ago, and afterwards we talked for a while about creativity and marketing and the power of starting something, keeping going, and building a rhythm of it.

Jason laughs about his original videos now, but he kept recording them and they kept helping people. I like @thejamesashford ‘s definition of a marketing plan: “Do shit, and if it works, do more of that shit and do it better. If it doesn’t work, stop that shit or change that shit.”

It’s the rhythm, the consistency which helps you do all this.

I’d argue building a rhythm of creativity – something which stirs up that creative mindset within you, even if it’s been dormant for a while – is a good place to start, because it releases the pressure of “do marketing” and “make sales” and “get results”…and yet at the same time it’s almost guaranteed to stir up something in your mind which will lead to those things.

Here are a few ways you might begin building a rhythm of creativity into your life. Detail is in the full post (link in bio and story).

Set a very small goal every day (like 200 words of writing)

Connect your new habit to one you are already doing (like posting on LinkedIn while you’re drinking your first coffee)

Make it a challenge (like 8 days or 30 days or 100 days)

But start and keep going. Get in a rhythm.
