Whisky for me is an experience. A slow, patient, “right way is the long way” approach to life and drinks and good things.

It’s world whisky day, so I looked back at some whisky experiences and they’re all associated with restful, beautiful, quiet, friendly, warm things (and people).

Things like taking a week out at the @treshnish farm cottages with no phone signal or WiFi. Going out to watch the sunset with a dram of Ledaig.

Walking along the Treshnish coast to find the Whisky Cave (four separate times until I finally found it). Having a wee dram in the back of the cave, then sitting outside in the sunshine with the falling water from the cliffs above misting my face.

Taking the tour at @tobermorydistillery (many times) with visiting friends. Trying new expressions and appreciating today’s rain which helps become tomorrow’s whisky.

Doing the @talisker tasting experience which is one of the best I’ve ever experienced. Sights and sounds of Skye on screens all around you as you taste… then leaving to walk up to talisker bay and wander the black sandy beach.

A few drops of firewhisky in hot butterbeer at the Wizarding World in Florida, enjoying diagon alley and all the rides with my four nephews.

Stumbling across a haggis and whisky bar in Edinburgh with my niece, eating some of the best haggis nachos I’ve ever had, and laughing and talking and trying @ncnean for the first time.

A bottle of @raasaydistillery whisky as a gift from my accountants on the day I finally bought and moved into my dream home on the island. A dream they knew about and worked with me towards, for over ten years.

So many quiet evenings inside, with the rain lashing down and the darkness falling early, and me cosy with a warming glass.

And all the accoutrements to go with it - savoury biscuits, sweet shortbread, hand made chocolates, home made soup, fresh bread, @isle_of_mull_cheese boards, whisky chilli salt on @thefoodieshackfollowers pizza…

I love the fact that whisky is slow. It takes years to make. It needs to sit and rest quietly in casks in the darkness before it comes into the light, golden and warm and welcoming.

Here’s to good experiences, and slowing down.

Took a little drive today to enjoy the sun sparkling on the water, the blues and the greens, the adorable little lambs frolicking in the fields, the mountains and hills visible for miles, and a general sense of happiness and well being.
