Saturday morning is for waffles and blackberry mushka.

What is blackberry mushka you say? I’m glad you asked.

When I was growing up in Phoenix, every autumn round about blackberry time our family would make the two hour pilgrimage north to the Land Of The Great Blackberry Bushes. They were prolific by the creeksides in Sedona.

We’d wear our oldest clothes - flannels and ripped jeans and old shoes we didn’t care about - because we knew we’d get stained and torn and sweaty and exhausted. We’d bring a few coolers and loads of buckets.

And for a whole day we’d pick as many blackberries as we could get our hands on. (We’d eat some too, of course, but always sort of on the sly.)

The sky was usually blue, the air fresh and bright (maybe not cool, but much cooler than the heat of the city and desert). The mountains rose up in the background and we could wash our faces and hands in the sharp cold water of the creek.

At the end of the day we’d load everything into the coolers, and drive back down to the desert and the heat and the sand.
And store the blackberries in the big freezer to use throughout the year.

Our favourite pancake and waffle topping was something we called “berry mushka”. We’d simmer the blackberries in water and sugar, with a little cornflour, and it turned into this fruity syrupy goodness.

I was telling a friend this story last night, and remembering I have many bags of blackberries in my freezer from the autumn. So I decided this morning to make lemon blackberry waffles with the mushka.

Only I didn’t have lemons so I used limes. And I found some cream so I put lime zest in the whipped cream.

It’s utterly glorious. I recommend it!!

Tasted like the best parts of childhood. Happy Saturday. 💚✨

Sunset walk along the River Ness tonight.

Have had some productive days working with @awawithadam in Inverness - really good stuff, and also a good bit of time inside and on screens, so I went for a wander and just watched the sky, the trees, the flowers, the blossoms….

…it’s good for the soul. And the mind.

There’s something very soothing about watching water flow. Seeing colours paint themselves across the sky. Feeling pink blossoms, light as air, fall around you. Discovering nature’s confetti all over your shoes. Breathing the cool fresh air, feeling the breeze across your face.

There truly is beauty everywhere!

Decided to wander Tobermory like I was visiting for the day.

Living on the island means some days I’m coming to these beautiful places with practicality and adulting life, rather than the “I have all the time in the world” life when I used to visit. I have a doctors appointment or need to pick something up or I’m only there after the shops are closed. And it’s been a long winter so it’s just lovely to see all the ships and restaurants open, serving, bursting with colour and cheer and good things.

So when I popped in yesterday to run some errands, after those were done i…

…got ice cream from @mullicecream (cherry and dark chocolate + Tobermory whisky marmalade, HELLO)

…had a lovely little crab sandwich from @fishermanspierseafood (fresh and light)

…wandered the light house trail and smelled all the wild garlic

…took the path I don’t usually take and made a full circle up and over the golf course

…met up with a friend for dinner and decided to try the new and updated @thegallerytobermory which was fantastic - the bourbon sour was spot on, the scallops light and charred perfectly, the focaccia light as a feather, and the people kind and attentive

Quite enjoyable all round! ❤️✨❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
