When you get the chance, you always pop in and see a client on your way past their town!

Our team retreat in wales was a mere 45 mins from one of my favourite (and long time) clients, @sharon.baker.mvp , who lives and works in Hereford.

Turns out Hereford is the most charming of towns: black and white framed houses, diagon-alley style streets hung with cheerful bunting, little museums, and Sharon cheerfully waving to this person and that person as we walked by.

We had a gorgeous brunch at @thebookshophfd (French toast for me!), and then a walk around the town, to the river, which was obligingly sparking in the last of the summer sun.

Meeting client in their home town gives me more understanding of them and their marketing goals than hours of online meetings could do. Sharon will be running an event next year, and some of the people we passed may be the very people she invites. Here is the venue. There, another one they considered.

It makes it real.

Ok… it is time. Autumn is officially here!

Every season I switch the photos on my “window wall” (like a four square paned glass window to the current season)… but honestly it’s been probably over a year since I’ve changed them.

Things have been a bit… full. We’ve had some changes in my business - leadership and team and the business support I get - and I’ve been working on buying a house on an island and selling my own house at the same time and not knowing if that’s going to work out. And partly due to these things (and a few other things as per), my mental headspace and physical health haven’t been stellar.

So something as simple as “yay we are moving into a new season” hasn’t really registered. Most days I’ve gone from one to the next, utterly shocked to discover it’s spring or summer or autumn.

And let’s be honest… cold grey rainy days every day means it’s not felt very “summer”! I haven’t minded (much), since I prefer the cold, but I think that confused my mind too.

But. Things are a little different. Changes are happening and transitions are coming. We’ve rebuilt the leadership team for PF and I’m beginning to get the advice and support I need, and best of all I have a move date for my new house!! Complete with a removal company all booked!

So although I usually wait to change the seasonal pics when I feel autumn in the air (crisp, cold, a little sharpness, falling leaves), and it’s still fairly warm and muggy most days with only a few golden leaves… I’m going for it.

This is the season of change. I’m calling it.

Dear accountant,

You are one of the most amazing people to exist in the business world.

You’re aware of your skills, but you also think it’s a little dramatic to rave about you, because you don’t like to boast.

Well, let me boast on your behalf, and remind you of the life changing, business supporting, even world changing work you do. And the person you are.

You’re supportive. Patient. You listen, and care about the business your clients run.

You’re measured. Wise. You consider your words, and are not carried away with emotion: not because you’re not capable of that, but because you know they need you to be their rock.

When the time is right, you direct them back to those beautiful little scratches which can change their lives: the numbers.

You create sheets the business owner doesn’t always understand, but you help them understand what they need to, and take care of the rest.

When the cash isn’t there, you help them find where it’s been hiding, and give it back to them. So they can pay their bills and pay their mortgages and buy the house and move to the country and pay for the children’s university and buy the horse. Or whatever matters to them.

Along with all of this, as if it’s not enough, you’re also a curious human being.

You think of new ideas, all the time. You love your team members: you praise them and direct them and help them find their sweet spot of using their skills in the way they truly enjoy. You care about the world you inhabit, and do everything you can to make it a little better.

You’re generous. You’re collaborative. If another accountant is struggling, you’re the first to speak up or offer your time. You help those who need help because it’s the right thing to do.

And you are who we love to help when it comes to understanding and enjoying marketing.

We will always believe you capable of great things.

Because you do great things every day.
